Scholastic Journalism Week has begun!
Scholastic Journalism Week is here! The Journalism Education Association’s annual week of celebration focuses on promoting the importance and benefits of teaching journalism in schools. Students who participate are not only learning about why they love to be a part of their school’s media programs, they also learn how to reach out to their fellow students and teach others the importance of journalism in schools! Follow Scholastic Journalism Week on Twitter, @SJW2015, and use the hashtag #SJW2015 when you show others how you’re participating!
WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO CELEBRATE?
There are lots of ways to join in the #SJW2015 fun! Here are a few of our favorites:
1. Check out the nearly forty ideas JEA has listed on their website! With everything ranging from hosting a “Meet the Press” evening at your school, to having students write letters to their local newspaper, there are tons of ways you and your students can participate this week!
2. Picture Freedom, a nationwide scholarship contest, invites students to share photos and artwork that illustrate freedom of expression on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter by using the hashtag #PictureFreedom. Twenty five winners will each receive a $1,000 scholarship!
3. Have your students write and submit essays to the SPJ/JEA High School Essay Contest. This year’s topic: “Why is it important for journalists to seek the news and report it?” Winners have the opportunity to receive scholarships!
