A Mid-Autumn Checkpoint: Let’s Leave No Page Unturned!

As October rolls in, school yearbook advisors find themselves at a pivotal point in the yearbook creation process. This month is crucial for setting the tone and ensuring everything runs smoothly for the remainder of the year. Your theme, design, and layouts should all be underway. However, fall is the perfect time to pause and look around at what’s going on in the school and your community. It’s time to have some fun and make sure you are incorporating all these great events within your yearbook.  Here’s a checklist to help you gauge where you should be and what to focus on this October.

Let’s Spice Up Your Yearbook Progress with Some Fun!

Finalizing Theme/Cover Design:

By October, your yearbook theme should be finalized. Whether it’s "A Year to Remember," "Chasing Dreams," or something completely unique, this theme will guide the design and content throughout the yearbook. Collaborate with your staff to brainstorm creative elements that align with your school’s spirit. Check out our latest yearbook themes for more inspiration.Your theme will also inspire your cover design as well. Although you may still be working on creating a unique cover that speaks to your school, don’t forget that there are 7 Design Fundamentals  you can follow to ensure your cover is engaging and visually appealing.

Planning for Fall Events:

Incorporating yearbooks into fall events can enhance engagement and create memorable content. Here are some ideas:

  • Fall Themes: Incorporate fall themes into yearbook designs, using colors and motifs that reflect the season for specific pages.

  • Live Social Media Updates: Use social media to share live updates and photos during fall events, promoting engagement and encouraging students to submit their own photos for the yearbook.

  • Contests: Organize contests related to fall events (best costume, best pumpkin design), and feature winners in the yearbook.

  • Photo Booths: Set up a themed photo booth at events like homecoming or Halloween. Encourage students to take fun pictures that can be featured in the yearbook.

Fundraising that Works:

As a parent or yearbook committee chairperson, you can make a difference at your school and start programs or initiatives which will enable the entire student body to participate in the fun and make memories that will last a lifetime. Remember, every child deserves a keepsake of their school days. So let’s help make that happen.

  • Pumpkin Sales: Partner with a local farm to sell pumpkins. You can set up a booth at school events ( ex: Trunk or Treat) or local market.  Check out yearbook funding for more ideas.

  • Fall Bake Sale: Organize a bake sale featuring seasonal treats like pumpkin muffins, apple pie, and caramel apples.

  • Harvest-themed Craft Fair: Organize a craft fair where local artisans can sell their goods, and your school receives a portion of the sales.

Tip - No Trick: The National Scholastic Press Association offers resources, tips, and grants for yearbooks. For more information, check out  NSPA

Remember, by the end of October, you should feel confident about your yearbook’s direction and momentum. With the right planning and engagement, you’ll be well on your way to creating a memorable yearbook that captures the essence of your school year. Happy yearbooking and happy fall y’all!
